It’s that time of year. Snowy powder’s been falling heavy, the sun’s blazing, and skis everywhere are begging to be launched downslope off the side of a mountain. It’s ski season in New Mexico!
Taos and its numerous ski resorts are an underrated option compared to the more frequented Colorado and Utah resorts. Still, each offers its own perks and qualities that make a visit to Taos a worthwhile adventure this snowy season. In this blog edition, we are providing a helpful roadmap on the ins and outs of the Taos Ski Valley and which downhill adventure might be your cup of cocoa!
Here’s a guide to making the most of your next Taos ski trip;
Taos Ski Valley Resort – 35 Minutes from Taos Plaza
We can’t talk about Taos skiing without talking about the largest of them – Taos Ski Valley Resort, nestled amongst the highest peaks of New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo mountains along the range’s southern edge. Opened in 1957 after Ernie Blake looked down in his plane and fell in love with its rugged face, Taos Valley Ski Resort has operated as a fiercely independent ski resort for nearly 70 years.
Taos Ski Valley is a cut above the rest for skiers looking for challenging runs and a raw, visceral downhill experience. A sign right at the base of the runs reads, “Don’t Panic! You’re looking at only 1/30 of Taos Ski Valley. We have many easy runs too!” with “easy” underlined – to reassure skiers gazing up at the immediately steep run at the base of the mountain that there is more to TSV than black diamonds and DBDs. With 1,294 acres of skiable runs, there are enough greens and blues to explore until you feel sharp (or crazy) enough to tackle some of the more trying terrain. With its acclaimed ski school, this resort is a must-stop for ambitious skiers visiting New Mexico.
Angel Fire Ski Resort – 45 Minutes from Taos Plaza
If you’re looking for a resort with more relaxed digs, Angel Fire Ski Resort might be your vibe. Despite its intense-sounding name, it’s one of the area’s friendlier resorts for beginners and families. Opened in 1966, it boasts beautiful views of the valley and Wheeler Peak (New Mexico’s tallest mountain) and a good mix of easy and intermediate runs to keep things interesting without feeling overwhelming.
That said, Angel Fire doesn’t get as much snow as some other spots, and it can get pretty packed during peak times. Its accessibility goes both ways – while beginners might find precisely what they need, seasoned skiers might find something to be desired. Still, if you’re looking for a chill day on the mountain with incredible views, Angel Fire delivers!
Red River Ski Area – 50 Minutes from Taos Plaza
Red River is what you’d call a “classic” ski town experience, lauded by locals as an authentic ski town without any frills. Opened in the 1970s, the facilities can feel a bit dated compared to some of the bigger-name resorts, but it possesses a certain throwback energy that keeps people returning year after year.
The runs here are limited, especially for beginners, and it’s not exactly the cheapest option in the area. But if you’re after a laid-back atmosphere with fewer crowds (especially if you can hit it during off-peak times), Red River is worth checking out. It’s the kind of ski resort that feels more local and low-key, with a cute-as-a-button town to explore when you’re all skied-out.
Sipapu Ski Resort – 35 Minutes from Taos Plaza
If affordability is at the top of your list, Sipapu Ski Resort has you covered. Known as the most budget-friendly ski resort in New Mexico, Sipapu is perfect for those who want to hit the slopes without breaking the bank. It’s a smaller resort, which means a more laid-back feel and fewer crowds — a win for anyone looking to avoid the hustle and bustle of the larger ski areas.
The base area is pretty small, so don’t expect a ton of amenities, but that’s part of the charm. It’s an excellent choice for families, beginners, or solo skiers looking for a no-pressure experience. Plus, the snow here is solid, even if the terrain isn’t as vast or challenging as what you’ll find at Taos Ski Valley. For a relaxed, no-frills day on the mountain, Sipapu is a hidden gem.
Whether you’re chasing adrenaline on Taos Ski Valley’s expert runs, soaking in the views at Angel Fire, embracing small-town charm in Red River, or enjoying an affordable day at Sipapu, there’s a little something for everyone this Taos ski season! Cheers to making some memories on the slopes this winter. And when you’ve had your fun, our El Pueblo Lodge is the perfect cozy spot to help you unwind and warm up. Happy skiing!
